Sheridan Technical College

Adult General Education / AGE

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program provides basic literacy and life skills for individuals who desire to improve their academic level, with the intent of obtaining a GED® diploma, technical training, employment or citizenship. The program provides remediation based on an individual’s academic needs.

The ABE online program is under the umbrella of Adult General Education (AGE). A student may register for ABE with Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) scores below 9.0 (for students who are entering a technical program) or at least one TABE score of less than 9.0 (for those who are planning on taking the GED® test). This program strives to inspire and motivate students to become productive, self-sufficient members of society. The program is based upon the assessed needs of each individual student and the academic and employability requirements related to Florida’s comprehensive Career and Technical Education programs.

ABE online instruction provides individualized basic skills related instruction to educationally disadvantaged students (including individuals with Limited English Proficiency) whose basic skills deficiencies may prevent success in career and technical preparatory programs or prevent completion of licensure in a career and technical preparatory program of their choice.

The ABE online program is competency based, thus completion time depends on the progress made by each individual student. Instructors ensure that opportunities are provided for students to achieve their maximum potential in a minimum amount of time.

ABE basic skills related instruction encompasses a combination of the following instructional components:

  • Reading
  • Language
  • Mathematics
  • Basic Computer Literacy
  • Employability Skills

Face-to face ABE classes are available mornings, afternoons, evenings, and Saturday .A student has the option of a face-to-face or online class. Online coursework is available 24/7.

TABE scores are good for two years.

The program is open entry, open exit thus allowing a student to complete when he/she meets their Basic Skills Requirement. Upon completion, the student will then be transferred to Applied Academics for Adult Education (AAAE)  or GED® preparation classes depending on their career or technical program.

Sheridan Technical College’s Face-to-face ABE program is located in building 14 or on Sheridan’s new West Campus. Online office in building 12.

GED® Preparation:

The GED® Preparation program is available to those students who do not have a high school diploma and intend to enroll or are currently enrolled in a Workforce Education Program. This course provides individualized instruction in preparation for the GED® test and allows you to work at your own pace. The GED® Preparation course includes the four subject areas measured on the GED® test:

  • Reasoning through Language Arts
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science
  • Social Studies

We offer the GED® preparation course online and face-to-face.  Face-to face GED® classes are available mornings, afternoons and evenings at the main Sheridan Technical College campus. Please call 754-321-5492. For more information on our ONLINE GED® test preparation course, please call 754-321-5451.

Prior to enrolling in the GED® preparation course you will need to take the TABE placement test.  The TABE test is offered at the MAIN campus, Monday – Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in Building 11 and at the WEST campus on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. in Room 116, no appointment necessary. There is a $10 testing fee and you will need to bring a photo ID.

Applied Academics for Adult Education (AAAE):

AAAE provides basic skills remediation and the integration of academic skills in technical instruction. The laboratory is designed and equipped to provide a comprehensive academic support program through the utilization of multipurpose instructional materials and resources.

The AAAE program is under the umbrella of Adult General Education (AGE). A student may register for AAAE with Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) scores of 6.0 or above, for academic, technical and personal success. The  Applied Academics for Adult Education program strives to inspire and motivate students to become productive, self-sufficient members of society. This AAAE system is based upon the assessed needs of the individual and the academic and employability requirements related to Florida’s comprehensive Career Education programs.

This program is competency based, thus completion time depends on the progress of each individual. Instructors ensure that opportunities are provided for students to achieve their maximum potential in a minimum amount of time.

AAAE instruction provides:

Individualized basic skills related instruction to educationally disadvantaged students (including individuals with Limited English Proficiency) whose basic skills deficiencies may prevent success in technical job preparatory programs or prevent completion of licensure vocational job preparatory programs of their choice.

AAAE encompasses a combination of the following instructional components:

  • AAAE Basic Skills Related Instruction
  • Reading
  • Language
  • Mathematics
  • Basic Computer Literacy
  • Employability Skills

A student has the option of a face-to-face or online class. Face-to-face AAAE are available mornings, afternoons, evenings, and Saturday classes.

TABE scores are good for two years.

The AGE programs are open entry, open exit thus allowing a student to compete when he/she meets their Basic Skills Requirement. At verification of a student completion, he/she is referred to their counselor.

Sheridan Technical College’s face-to-face  AGE programs are located in building 14 and at the Sheridan West campus.
