Barbering Cosmetology and Spa Services

Advanced Esthetician – 600 hrs | Evening classes only

The Advanced Esthetics program is designed for registered Facials/Skin Care Specialists within the state of Florida who wish to enhance their skills in order to be more readily employable by the Spa Industry, Medical Offices, Plastic Surgeons and Medi-Spa Industry.

This program offers a sequence of courses that provide coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education. We will provide technical skill proficiency, higher- order reasoning and problem solving skills, along with work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation specific skills. The program is designed to familiarize the student with the current new trends in the field of Esthetics and help to meet the demand for personalized care and Therapeutic treatments.

The content includes, but is not limited to: communication, leadership, human relations, and
employability skills; safe and efficient work practices, spa therapies, advanced peels, exfoliators,
microdermabrasion, micro-current, LED therapy. Students will also become familiar with advanced esthetic procedures and wound care, medical terminology, nutrition and its effects on
the body and appearance.

Prerequisite: Must have a Facials Specialty Registration

Barbering – 1200 hrs | Blended day or evening classes

Adult Barbering – This program is designed to prepare for employment as a Restricted Barber or the Full Barbering program. It includes training in hair cutting with clippers, shears, styling, shaving, mustache and beard designs, hair coloring, chemical waving, and relaxing.
Learn to become a Professional in the industry of Barbering. The Restricted Barber Program prepares students for employment as a licensed restricted barber. Training includes background in:

  • Safe and efficient work practices
  • Florida Barber Law and Rules
  • Chemistry (Demonstrates appropriate understanding of basic sciences)
  • Bacteriology, Anatomy, Physiology
  • Identify and perform trimming/shaping hair (to work with a variety of tools and equipment)
  • Identify and perform hairstyles
  • Identify and perform mustache and beard design
  • Demonstrate shaving the face
  • Identify and perform facial treatments

Barber Training Program length may vary based upon a student’s ability, attendance, and prior knowledge. Barber graduates are eligible to apply for licensure in Florida as a Restricted Barber, 1000 hours or Barber 1200 hours. Students are introduced to the laboratory where they render hair and facial treatments to the general public for a nominal fee. This invaluable work experience at Sheridan Technical College prepares the student with entry level skills. The Barber curriculum is designed to qualify students for the Barber Licensing Examination which is governed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Cosmetology – 1200 hours | Blended day or evening classes

Learn to become a professional in the industry of Cosmetology. The Cosmetology Training program focuses on a broad spectrum of subjects, which include:

  • Florida Cosmetology Laws and Rules
  • Sanitation and Sterilization
  • Facials (including skin care and hair removal)
  • Hair Shaping
  • Scalp treatments and hair care rinses
  • Shampoos and rinses
  • Hair arranging (styling)
  • Hair coloring
  • Chemical waving
  • Relaxing/Straightening
  • Manicure/Pedicure/Nail extension
  • Beauty Salon Management
  • Hair extensions

The Cosmetology Training program length may vary based upon a student’s ability, attendance, and prior knowledge. Cosmetology graduates are eligible to apply for licensure or registration in Florida as a cosmetologist & esthetician. Sheridan offers fulltime and part-time hours depending on individual needs.

Facials Specialty/Esthetician Training – 260 hours | Day or evening classes

Twoman performing facialhe Facials Specialty/Esthetician Program prepares students for employment as a cosmetology facial specialist, also known as an Esthetician. Training includes background in bacteriology, hygiene, personality development, Florida law, machine and manual facials, tweezing/waxing, basic makeup, eyebrow/lash tinting, and entrepreneurship.

This Facials Specialty/Esthetician Program prepares individuals with the necessary skills needed as an employee in a beauty salon or spa specializing in:

  • Skin care
  • Facial massage
  • Makeup

The Facials Specialty/Esthetician course contains detailed competencies that all facial students should possess for the performance of services. Instruction and learning activities are provided in a laboratory setting with hands-on experience using chemicals, implements, and equipment appropriate to the program content in accordance with current trade practices. Instruction is designed to qualify students for employment while obtaining registration from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Massage Therapy – 750 hours | Blended

The Licensed Massage Therapy program is designed to prepare students for employment as licensed massage therapists in a variety of health care and wellness settings. Licensed graduates may be employed in facilities such as spas, resorts, sports clinics, corporate offices, medical offices, and/or self-employed.

The content of the Licensed Massage Therapy program includes, but is not limited to: anatomy; physiology; kinesiology; clinical pathology; (western and non-western); massage therapy and bodywork including, theory, assessment and application, professional standards, ethics, and law and business practices. In addition, all students will complete basic health career core curriculum including AIDS education, CPR, human relations, employability skills, and computer literacy.

The Licensed Massage Therapy student will develop skills in the manipulation of soft tissues of the human body through instruction by demonstration. Student practice includes various massage techniques focusing on basic Swedish massage and the use of hydrotherapy and other allied modalities. Licensed Massage Therapy program graduates are prepared to take the National Certification Examination in Therapeutic Massage and must be licensed to work in the State of Florida. Uniform to be purchased at STC Bookstore Only.
