Academic Skills Building (ASB)
ASB provides basic skills remediation and the integration of academic skills in vocational
instruction. The laboratory is designed and equipped to provide a comprehensive academic support program through the utilization of multipurpose instructional materials and resources.
The ASB program is under the umbrella of Adult General Education (AGE). A student may register for ASB with Casa Goals Test scores of 9.0 or above, for academic, technical and personal success. The ASB program strives to inspire and motivate students to become productive, self-sufficient members of society. This ASB system is based upon the assessed needs of the individual and the academic and employability requirements related to Florida’s comprehensive Career Education programs. The program is competency based, thus completion time depends on the progress of each individual. Learning managers ensure that opportunities are provided for students to achieve their maximum potential in a minimum amount of time.
ASB instruction provides:
Individualized basic skills related instruction to educationally disadvantaged students (including
individuals with Limited English Proficiency) whose basic skills deficiencies may prevent success in vocational job preparatory programs or prevent completion of licensure vocational job preparatory programs of their choice. ASB encompasses a combination of the following instructional components:
- Reading
- Language
- Mathematics
- Basic Computer Literacy
- Employability Skills
A student has the option of a face-to-face or online class. Face-to-face ASB classes are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Casas Goals scores are good for two years if you are an active student.
The ASB program is open-entry/open-exit, open exit thus
allowing a student to complete when he/she meets their Basic Skills Requirements. At verification of a student’s completion, he/she is referred to their counselor.
Sheridan Technical College’s face-to-face ASB program is located in Building 14 at the Sheridan Main campus. The ASB Online Department is located in Building 12 on the Main campus.
