Transportation, Distribution & Logistics

Commercial Vehicle Driving Program

Prepare for a career in the transportation industry through Sheridan Technical College's Commercial Vehicle Driving program. Students receive classroom instruction and hands-on driving experience designed to prepare for entry-level truck driving careers and Class A CDL testing.

Commercial vehicle drivers transport goods and materials across local, regional, and national routes. Graduates may pursue opportunities with trucking companies, transportation providers, delivery fleets, and logistics organizations.

What Is a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)?

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to operate certain commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers and heavy trucks. The Commercial Vehicle Driving program will prepare students for entry-level employment as a professional local or over-the-road (OTR) truck driver.

Upon successful completion of the program, which includes 1,000 miles of local and highway driving, Commercial Vehicle Driving students will receive a technical certificate, and will be able to test at our facility for the Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Commercial Vehicle Driving is a job preparatory program that instructs students in:

  • Proper loading and securing of cargo
  • Double clutching and shifting techniques of 9-, 10-, and 13-speed transmissions
  • Pre-Trip/Road Inspection
  • Coupling and uncoupling
  • Maneuvering
  • Backing of large tractor-trailers, truck controls and systems

How to Get a CDL in Florida

Individuals seeking a Class A CDL generally must obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), complete applicable Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements, and successfully complete the required CDL skills testing.

Sheridan Technical College's Commercial Vehicle Driving program provides training designed to help students prepare for the next steps toward commercial driving careers.

Career Opportunities

Commercial drivers are employed by trucking companies, distribution centers, logistics firms, freight carriers, construction companies, and municipal fleets.

Graduates may pursue careers including:

  • Commercial Truck Driver
  • Class A CDL Driver
  • Regional Truck Driver
  • Local Delivery Driver
  • Transportation Operator
  • Fleet Driver

Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license and another form of documentation proving residency in Florida
  • CDL permit – please make sure you review the CDL handbook to pass your written CDL permit exam taken at the DMV.
  • For a Class A permit, study general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles (Sections 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6).
  • A seven-year driving record – while you are at the DMV, please request your 7-year driving record. This does not mean you need to be driving for 7 years. If you have been licensed for only one to three years, request a three-year driving record.
